Conflict or Catalyst? A Practitioner’s Deep Dive into Working with Stage 2 Teams
This two-day virtual training is designed for certified GDQ practitioners who want to go beyond recognising Stage 2 – and develop real confidence and skill in working with it.
Stage 2 (counterdependency and fight) is where conflict between team members emerges, counter-dependency toward the leader intensifies, and previously polite group norms start to break down. Research shows it’s the stage where teams most commonly get stuck – yet it’s also the essential gateway to trust, structure, and high performance. Handled well, Stage 2 conflict is a powerful catalyst for development. Mishandled, it becomes a pattern that can define a team for years.
Across two focused half-days, you’ll build both theoretical depth and practical skill – exploring the research, examining real GDQ profiles from Stage 2 teams, and practising intervention approaches in a safe, reflective learning environment alongside fellow practitioners.
Day 1 – Understanding Stage 2 from the inside out
- The research behind Stage 2: what’s really happening and why it matters
- How to identify Stage 2 patterns in GDQ results and team behaviour
- The role of the leader and what teams need from them at this stage
- How to read subgroup dynamics and polarisation in the GDQ report
- Case-based discussions and group reflection
Day 2 – Intervening with confidence
- Designing Stage 2-specific interventions: what works and what to avoid
- How to facilitate goal and role clarity as a lever for development
- Managing personal vs. task conflict keeping the team moving forward
- Practitioner roleplay and skill practice
